Format Descriptions
Foursome Alternate Shot - Frequently referred to as Scotch Foursomes in the United States, this is alternate shot play. The first player on the two-man team hits from the tee, the second player on the team hits the next shot, the first player then hits the third shot and so on, until the ball is in the hole. The players on each team alternate drives, regardless of who sank the putt on the preceding green.
Four-Ball Better Ball - Commonly recognized in the United States as Better Ball, Four-Ball competition has one two-man team competing directly with a second two-man team. Each player plays his own ball and the better score of each pair decides the outcome of the hole.
Singles - This is the most basic format of the game of golf, one player against the other. Total strokes for the round are not considered; winning each hole is the goal.
