Scotland Short Stay Tours: Gleneagles 4/1/13 – 10/31/13

Day 1:

Depart USA for Scotland.

Day 2:

Upon your arrival in Scotland you will be met by a SGH Golf representative, who will assist you with your luggage and present you with your travel guide, before showing you to your waiting rental vehicle. You will then transfer to Auchterarder and the Gleneagles Hotel.

Gleneagles Hotel.jpg Few hotels have become Institutions - Gleneagles is one. When the hotel first opened in 1924, the Morning Post headline read: “The Scottish Palace in the Glens. The playground of the gods.” A trifle exaggerated you may think, but once you have enjoyed the hospitality you may be inclined to agree. No written words can evoke the sense of peace and space you will find at the Gleneagles Hotel - the sunlight streaming down Glendevon, the wild beauty of the woods and hills that surround you as far as the eye can see, moonlight dappling the formal gardens all adds to the legend. There are not many great hotels left in the world; Gleneagles is one of them.

Today golf will be arranged on the Gleneagles Queens Course.

Gleneagles Queens.jpg Threading through high ridges on the north and west sides of the estate, the Queen's offers lovely woodland settings, lochans and ditches as water hazards, as well as many moorland characteristics. At 5,192 yards long, the challenge of the first nine can be deceptive, with even some of the best players finding it a test to make par into a fresh southwesterly breeze. In its long history, it has played host to some of the world's golfing greats. The beautiful settings and the challenge of the golf have attracted many top golfers.

Day 3:

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged at Gleneagles Kings Course.

Gleneagles Kings.jpg The ancient realm of Moray offers a wide choice of golf and its premier course is undoubtedly Moray Old. The wide expanse of gorse encrusted links, between the town of Lossie and the Cove sea lighthouse, has proved ideal for the game and planted within it are two of the best courses on the Moray coast. On the old course the 1st and 18th are set next to the town, although the outlying holes zigzag more than the traditional links, nine out nine back configurations. Moray old provides perhaps the best finishing holes in Scotland, an impressive par four at 423 yards.

Non golfers may like to visit Scone Palace.

Scone Palace.jpg The present castellated palace, enlarged and embellished in 1803, incorporates the 16th century and earlier palaces. The Moot Hill at Scone was the site of the famous coronation Stone of Scone, brought there in the 9th century by Kenneth McAlpine, King of Scots. In 1296 the Stone was seized by the English and taken to Westminster Abbey. The palace houses magnificent collections of porcelain, furniture, ivories, 18th century clocks and 16th century needlework.

Day 4:

Today after breakfast golf will be arranged on the Gleneagles PGA Course.

Gleneagles PGA.jpg The PGA Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is a modern classic, combining the best of both earlier designs. Even for a champion and acclaimed golf architect like Nicklaus, The PGA Course was a challenge. A feature of The PGA Course is the feast of views of the spectacular countryside in which Gleneagles is set. Putting on the two-tier second green, you are distracted by the lush panorama of the rich Perthshire straths. The PGA Course will host the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Non golfers may like to visit Stirling Castle.

Stirling Castle.jpg Stirling occupies a strategic site on the River Forth, and it’s great castle stands high on a rocky crag commanding the approaches by sea and by land. Mary, Queen of Scots, lived here for several years and also celebrated her secret marriage to Lord Darnley at the castle. Two miles south of Stirling is the battlefield of Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce defeated the English armies in 1314. One of the best vantage points from which to view Stirling is the top of the national Wallace Monument, a prominent Victoria tower which stands above the river on a rocky crag and catches the eye for miles around. In the 1850’s there was a tide of nationalism that swept across the globe. One of the outcomes was the erection of the National Wallace Monument in memory of a great Scottish hero. The original structure was completed in 1869 with an addition to the building at a later date. This addition was the ‘Hall of Heroes’ in which you can find marble sculptures of other Scottish heroes as well as information concerning such greats as Robert the Bruce, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and David Livingston.

Day 5:

Today after breakfast golf will once again be arranged on the Gleneagles Kings Course.

Gleneagles-Kings.jpg The King’s Course, opened in 1919, is a masterpiece of design which has tested the aristocracy of golf, both professional and amateur. When Lee Trevino first played the King’s he memorably remarked; “If Heaven is as good as this, I sure hope they have some tee times left.” Selecting the right club for each approach shot is the secret on the King’s. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and exhilarating places to play golf in the world.

Non golfers may like to visit Glenturret Distillery.

Glenturret Distillery.jpg Nothing has ever been ordinary about Glenturret. Since its origins among the smugglers and illicit stills of the 18th Century, Scotland’s oldest distillery has had a singular life. Whisky booms and prohibition might have ruffled its feathers, but Glenturret weathered it all and these days its doors are open to welcome visitors. So don’t be shy - drop in and find out how whisky is made in the traditional way and how we use Glenturret single malt to create The Famous Grouse blends.
