Two hours east of Los Angeles, California, America's winter golf capital stretches along twenty-five miles of Highway 10 from the city of Palm Springs to the city of Indio and encompasses the towns of Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and La Quinta.
In these retirement and resort communities, golf has always been a way of life. Golf Carts sporting automobile license plates can be spotted on the streets, and the traditional two-car garage is a two-and-a-half here. For visitors, a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a must. From the snowy, 8,500-foot summit of the San Jacinto Mountain, the entire valley seems a mosaic of small, square green patches - each containing one or more golf courses.
